Hiding in Plain Sight - Domaine Remoriquet: The Last Unknown in Burgundy

Domaine Remoriquet Nuits-Saint-Georges “There are no more bargains; there are no more unknowns. I was pretty steadfast in this belief until last week. I have experienced countless micro-domaines across Burgundy with poor holdings in frost-ridden areas or mini-negociants crafting over-worked and over-priced wines barely worthy of the appellation Bourgogne. This is not to mention the new wave of hazy, faulty, ‘natural’ wines that are merely VdF. Research and tasting, the hard yards, allows us to separate the wheat from the chaff, and I have been under the impression that all the grain had been brought into the barn for winter. Domaine Remoriquet has dislodged our preconceptions. Domaine Remoriquet is a fourth-generation domaine based in the North of Nuits-Saint-Georges. All of their holdings are in this section between the village and the dividing line with Vosne-Romanee. Consequently, these are fundamentally expressive and elegant wines that also capture the structure and depth of Nuits. My overall impression: these are classical rather than forthright. Time will reveal their best features including the serious contours of their fruit spectra and the hints of spice that emerge in the Premier Crus. As intimated above, I am always reluctant to recommend a new domaine without qualifications. I recommend Domaine Remoriquet without qualifications.” — David — “Stylistically the wines are really well made ... The result is complete, quite luscious and very perfumed … The domaine’s major holding is some very old vines in Nuits Saint Georges Les Allots – a step up from the village Nuits St Georges and truly fantastic quality. The grapes are fermented in large concrete tanks. “I prefer concrete to stainless steel because it’s slower to heat and cool – similar to wood but easier to clean” says Gilles Remoriquet. Although the grapes are mainly destemmed, Gilles keeps some depending on the cuvée and the vintage – but only 5-15% perfect clusters are likely to be used – Gilles notes “I find they can add and interesting freshness if very carefully selected.” … 18 months of elevage here. The last months spent in tank, some as long as 20 months. Normally 20-25% new barrels for the 1er crus. After racking they go into tank or older barrels with their fine lees.” — Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report I Domaine Remoriquet 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges Offer: $139.00 “From mainly 3 parcels plus a tiny part of a 4th, all situated across the Northern side of Nuits towards Vosne. The Remoriquet 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges opens with the typical depth and stylistic contours we expect from this village. Dark stone-fruit with some red berry touches, coupled to hints of sous-bois, waft alluringly from the glass with coaxing. The palate is pleasingly medium-bodied, with structure and tannin, black cherry, hints of plum, and light earthy notes that tend to sweet dark cherry on the close. Very good for its level, I would be astonished by regional wine at this price, let alone a villages of this quality.” — David Order here (Link) I (Link) I Domaine Remoriquet 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges ‘Les Allots’ Offer: $165.00 “Again on the North end of Nuits, with clay-rich soils and several small springs (Allots in this instance deriving from “à l’eau”), directly adjacent to the band of Premier Cru sites above. Remoriquet’s oldest holdings lie here with a high proportion of vines planted in 1944. Boasting significantly more concentration, power, and a spot of unintegrated oak, the 2022 Les Allots opens with a brighter but not lifted nose of dark cherry, crushed blackberry and sous-bois. Coaxing here brings presence without revealing further detail. Resolutely medium-bodied, with a purity and focus not seen on the generic villages equivalent. The tannins may be finer, but are out in greater force, mustering especially on the long close. Further red fruits, balsam characteristics and a hint of turned earth. Very fine.” — David Order here (Link) III Domaine Remoriquet 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru ‘Les Bousselots’ Offer: $219.00 “Situated on the lower-mid slope on the Vosne-side of Nuits again, on clay-rich soils here. There is no escaping my bias here. Bousselots remains one of my favourite NSG 1er Crus; it is always so giving, sumptuous, and present, yet Nuits shines through with definition and olfactory firmness. Dried rose petals, which gain freshness with aeration and magically return to full herbacity, lead blood plum, red cherry, and cassis. Some spice and balsam lurk in the background. The lighter end of medium-bodied on the palate with a tensile line of refreshing acidity, and a very fine quality to the tannins. Red and black fruits mingle with market spices and light ore minerality. The finish has pleasing blood orange bitterness with some pith emerging that in time will be rendered satiny. What more could I want from Bousselots; expressive, superb.” — David Order here (Link) I (Link) V Domaine Remoriquet 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru ‘Les Damodes’ Offer: $225.00 “Situated on the upper slope, this vineyard in particular lies directly adjacent to Vosne Romanee — to which it very clearly shows stylistic affinity. The soil here is fine gravel on top of pink Premeaux limestone. The 2022 Damodes has more power, weight, and depth than the Bousselots, but lacks the finesse and precision than that lower-elevation plot brings. Dark, brambly fruit, gravel and mineral ores, balsam all waft alluringly from the glass with sous-bois making its presence felt with time. The palate is medium-bodied, with a resonant quality to the tannins. There is less symmetry here than the Bousselots, but ample dark red fruit, turned earth, broken rock, and dried tobacco all run in fine array across the palate. This is worthy of attention and offers a good counterweight to the Bousselots. No less fine.” — David Order here (Link) If you would like any of the above, would like to come by for a private appointment, or just have some questions — please let us know.
