“Every time I encounter Doug Lilburne I hope I may glean a fraction of his energy. His smile, however, is always infectious. Every time he encounters me, he looses a few braincells, apparently. Maybe I open too many bottles of wine? A good time, with me - who knew?
Doug’s wines resonate with his boundless enthusiasm for viticulture and winemaking. Typing the latter feels a little odd as he always stresses just how little he does in the winery. Truly, the wines lack artifice and feel very upfront. Yet they lack for nothing in quality and are some of the most sheerly drinkable wines I have encountered recently.
Like his bearded counterpart in SA, Simon Caica, Doug makes what he makes … and then the wines are gone. Snap up? Absolutely.”

Mise en Place 2025 Rutherglen Palomino
Offer: $55.00
from old vine Palomino plantings at Chambers of Rutherglen; barrel ferment then 8 months in old puncheons
“A richer vein of gold-yellow than its peers, the 2025 Rutherglen Palomino from Mise en Place wines bursts from the glass with aromas of dried pear and peach blossom. Trimming are nuances of sea spray and fresh cashews with complexifying touches of green olive, caper, and salted peach. The palate is tremendously satisfying. Full stop. Can I write that? A Great Wave of racy acidity renders the fresh and dried orchard fruit flavours most moreish, reaching a surging, salty crescendo 2/3-through. The finish: sneakily long and sprinkled in briny, nutty nuances. A short ride in a fast machine, for sure.”

Mise en Place 2025 Shiraz Grenache
Offer: $55.00
Shiraz from Doug’s ‘Home Block’ in Steels Creek (Yarra Valley), Grenache from the Pyrenees; 2 week ferment then 8 months in old, larger barrels. No B.S. once again.
“Deep, nearly midnight ruby-violet in the glass with a red-light district luridity lending a touch of the dangerous to the rim. Immediately 'on form' on first pour, this multi-regional Shiraz (Yarra Valley) - Grenache (Pyrenees) blend sees a Yank breathe new life into the quintessentially Australian art of crossing GIs*. Crushed blackberries, Cherry Ripe, and salted plum make up the core of the aromatic profile around which wreathe nuances of oregano and sweet cured fat. Despite the glossy density of the fruit there is great freshness here; salinity again is the key. The palate is full yet never seems to get bogged down in the lower reaches of the mouth, everything moves across the centre and upper areas of the tongue, structured by acidity and a light phenolic touch. Tannin plays a secondary role. Further red and black forest fruits, garrigue, and a crushed stone minerality with hints of blood orange appearing on the finish. Just like that, the glass is finished!”
