Mornington Peninsula, Victoria

“Another Mornington Chardy … have we gone mad?
We make no secret about our prejudices. Yet, the complete upturning of ones own preconceptions is one of the most satisfying experiences in tasting wine. This wine and, it must be said, the Onannon ‘Flinders’ — have been ever-so-slowly winning myself and David over to this region’s potential for producing Chardonnay of site-specificity and delineation of a ‘Burgundian’ kind.
A number of recent tastings of Victorian Chardonnay, of which many can be had for obscenely low prices, have completely turned the traditional hierarchy of wine on its head. I am reminded of the admonitions of the Egyptian sage Ipuwer, describing the collapse of the Old Kingdom: ‘the land turned like the potter’s wheel; [Australia] is a possessor of riches, and [Burgundy] has become a plunderer.’ I have taken some liberties in translation, but I think I have captured the essence of the sage’s wisdom …”

Symons 2024 Morning Peninsula Chardonnay
(Shelf Price: $56.00)
Offer Price: $46.00
“This 2024 Chardonnay, reflective of a mild-to-warm growing season and two sheltered, mature sites at the Coolart Creek and Jimjoca Vineyards), is aromatically precise with chiselled nuances of ripe orchard fruit, flaked almonds, freshly baked bread, and broken shells wafting from the glass. Behind, with coaxing, are pistachio praline, wax, and tarragon. The palate is fresh yet retains signature generosity of spirit, though something Chablisien lingers over the whole affair - perhaps it is the acid line coupled to the slightly honeyed almond finish? Peaches and white nectarine, hints of proving dough and further praline, mineral and saline touches, and light almond notes on the denouement. The finish is salty and cooling. A rare Peninsula Chardonnay that spotlights texture and vineyard complexities over base fruit and winemaking. Delicious, moreish.”
