“Something, dear readers, to tempt you midway through a dreary ‘full week’. The 2eme Vins (‘second wines’) of three of my favourite Pauillac estates, all of them classe cru themselves! I personally could not want for much more than the below in my house on a day such as today. Indeed, any day.

Lacoste-Borie is the the second wine of Grand-Puy Lacoste. ‘GPL’ is not just my favourite Pauillac, it is not just my favourite Claret, but it is most likely my favourite wine vintage-in, vintage out! This is GPL writ approachable, and hardly in minuature: typically austere, classic; with plenty of depth, fruit, and complexity in the form of smoky tea and mineral aromas. Superb. One could use a whole case just to stash away! Pair with entrecote bordelais and marrow bones.
The ‘Prelude’ from Grand-Puy Ducasse ... the other Grand-Puy* estate in Pauillac. Always stony, mean; somewhat linear with lovely briary and tobacco nuances. As the great Jancis writes: should certainly please lovers of traditional claret. Approach with caution, or with rare roast lamb rack.
And the HBL ‘La Chapelle’: what a treat, somewhat deeper and fleshier than the above two counterparts, slightly more swagger here. Pull the cork, pour a glass, and one is comfortably braced for the Automn. Pair with grouse or venison, maybe.”

Lacoste-Borie 2019 Pauillac
(Shelf Price: $115.00)
Offer: $98.00
“The 2019 Lacoste-Borie was impressive as a barrel sample sent to my home last spring. Now in bottle, it has a vivacious, quite floral, almost Margaux-like bouquet that bursts from the glass, featuring raspberry, rooibos and black currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with good concentration, a little spicier than I remember and a little softer in the finish, yet with good length and admirable harmony. It should drink nicely after a couple of years.”

Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse 2016 Pauillac ‘Prelude a Grand-Puy Ducasse’
(Shelf Price: $115.00)
Offer: $98.00
“Mid depth of crimson with still quite a bit of purple in it. Definitely stony Pauillac with a dry finish. Do not attempt to drink this without food! But it should certainly please lovers of traditional claret. It's not opulent and there's still a trace of tannin but it's well balanced and well behaved.”

Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal 2016 Pauillac ‘La Chapelle de Haut-Bages Liberal’
(Shelf Price: $125.00)
Offer: $115.00
“The 2016 La Chappelle Haut-Bages Liberal is a gorgeous second wine that punches far above its weight. Pliant, supple, and super-expressive, the 2016 is quite giving today. Racy dark cherry, plum, rose petal, and spice all flesh out this radiant, succulent wine. The 2016 was aged 70% in barrique and 30% in concrete.”
