Charles Oliver
Pyrenees, Victoria
“We’ve been on something of a ‘serious’ rosé bender of late. We never seem to have enough of the Chateau Simone
(Link) (shop regulars may better know this wine as David’s ‘Greatest Rosé in the World’), nor the opulent, oxidatively handled and new oak-laden Clos Cibonne
(Link) . Our recent discovery of the Moulin-La-Viguerie
(Link) wines of Tavel has only added to our excitement.
Fortunately, our uncontained enthusiasm for this oft-contemned category has been met with equal enthusiasm from you all. Indeed, when we first opened Le Tuffeau, none of us could ever have predicted that we would struggle to keep a $200 bottle of rosé on the shelf …
David has spoken at length about the ongoing Claret Revolution; this new release from Charles Oliver is for me a harbinger for a Rosé Restoration in Australian wine. We have already waxed lyrical over Steve Pannell’s Koomilya rosé, which David opined as Australia’s greatest. There may be a palace coup afoot.
All this should not distract from the simply wonderful ‘riserva’ grenache released alongside: R. Lopez de Heredia by way of the Victorian Pyrenees. Is it too cheeky to call it R. Charlez de Olivia ‘Viña Ausdonia’…?”

Charles Oliver 2023 Pyrenees Shiraz Rose ‘Cuvee Landucci’
(Shelf Price: $65.00)
Offer: $53.00
“Pouring a subtle orange-onion skin in the glass, a nod perhaps to Clos Cibonne, this premium 100% Shiraz Rose offering from Charles Oliver leaps to the elect pinnacle of Australian exemplars. Subtle aromas of strawberry, balsamic, dried herbs, bran and cedar, and blood orange waft gently from the glass. High toned notes of menthol and eucalypt add complexity and freshness.

What marks this wine is the extremely beautiful and singular texture: almost impossibly silken, soft and caressing, with beautifully integrated tannins and phenolics fully integrated, and a slight crescendo of acidity towards the lingering and pure finale. Myriad strawberry, some cherry, garrigue, orange rind, and a slight salty nuttiness towards the close. A magnificent wine.”

Charles Oliver 2022 Pyrenees Grenache ‘Cuvee Landucci’
(Shelf Price: $58.00)
Offer: $49.00
“A charming translucent ruby in the glass. The nose opens with delicate notes of dark cherry, chinotto orange, medicinal herbs, and eucalyptus. ‘Very Australian’, remarks David, after a rather boozy luncheon. ‘Unmistakably Pyrenees’, he adds. The palate brings an unexpected weight, a sapid fulsomeness which defies the ethereal impression of the nose, with notes of cherry liqueur and orange rind at the fore. The texture is supple and silken, with barely-apparent soft tannins that seem to melt into the fresh line of acid.
At Le Tuffeau we are very much proponents of ‘double-parking’; in one glass a thinking wine, in the other a drinking wine. If the rosé above is the thinker, this one’s the drinker.”

Readers, this is yet another reminder to get any Christmas orders in promptly. We are approaching the singularity of the final week out from The Big Day, and I advise with experience in this industry to avoid the big crunch that occurs with couriers, postal services, and the city. And remember: drink responsibly.
