Mayford '24 Chardonnay - If this had 'Beechworth' on the label, it would be twice the price ...

/ letuffeau.com (Link) “If this had ‘Beechworth’ on the label, it would be twice the price … at least!” — David Mayford Porepunkah, Victoria — “Porepunkah is a town fairly well-known now among Victorians. It’s a terrible shame that such renown isn’t for this winery. Why Mayford does not have a reputation equal amongst the great Chardonnay producers of Beechworth is simply baffling to me. Eleana Anderson is producing by far and away some of Victoria’s finest wines; aside from the Chardonnay offered below, she also makes Australia’s greatest Tempranillo, and a ridiculous Tempranillo-Cabernet blend. This wine, the ‘Oven’s Crossing’, could only have been designed in a laboratory to pull at David’s Claret and Rioja heartstrings at once. Its only flaw is that it’s bottled in a Burgundy-style bottle. I would hardly be going too far at all in saying that Eleana’s Chardonnay is one of my favourite, stylistically, in all of Australia. Sure, it hardly has the flashy oak treatment of what we have been conditioned to expect in ‘premium’ Chardonnay, but this could never mask its understated swagger and self-confidence that charms me so much. The previous incarnation of this wine from 2023 blew us away. I called it the closest thing in Australia to Chassagne-Montrachet. This 2024 is a worthy sequel—perhaps without the gun-flinty, reductive austerity and fine delineation, but a serious step up in terms of raw muscle power and concentration. It will age a treat if you are able to forget about it in the cellar, something I believe I would struggle to do. Forgive me for reminding you, Reader, that this is under $50 in a six-pack … ” — Nick ‘Chardy-Party’ Warren — ~ please note : discounts are automatically applied at the digital check-out! ~ — Mayford 2024 Porepunkah Chardonnay (Shelf Price: $65.00) Offer: $54.00 (20%-off) 6-Pack: $294.00 ($49/bottle) “A generous and weighty aromatic profile which opens with a wealth of yellow peaches and nectarines, pomelo, and a very Chassagne-esque hint of thyme oil adding lovely herbal nuance. The palate is similarly powerful and yellow-fruited, with a pear-like quality of flavour that is mirrored by a crunchy, front-of-the-palate acid profile. This surely reminds one of crunching down on a fresh Corella pear. The palate has a beautiful shape, and despite all of its power and yellow fruit it still feels lean; the phenolic profile remains coiled—mouth-watering, even—on the granitic mineral finish. There is certainly more here that only age will reveal. A very fine, very serious Chardonnay. Drink now with pleasure, but this is really a wine that is probably best kept in the cellar for at least in ten years, if you can resist. I am sure the Stelvin will hold.” — Nick Order here (Link) … Please join us for a drink soon. Reservations preferred.
