"The Poor Man's Tondonia" - Hermanos Pecina 2014 Rioja Crianza

letuffeau.com (Link) ~ “They have been called the poor man's Tondonia even if it may sound pejorative, because they are one of the few remaining traditionalists that offer their wines at very attractive prices.” ~ Luis Guttierez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate … Hermanos Pecina San Vicente de la Sonsierra Rioja Alta — “I have little to note here, Readers, after last Friday’s densely informative offer. This is simultaneously a serious wine and a wine of excellent ‘drinking’. Hermanos Pecina is new to Australia. The owner was the viticulturalist for La Rioja Alta for many years and looks to this bodega, and R. Lopez de Heredia, for benchmark practice. This is an traditional, even ultra-conservative, bodega. The fruit for the below Crinaza comes from three vineyards, with an average vine age of 40y/o: ‘El Codo’, ‘El Llano’, and ‘Finca Iscorta’.The Bodega owns a collection of several thousand old (10-20y/o American oak barrels; racking and rotating the wine between these every 6 months. The Crianza sees 24m in barrel then 18m in bottle aged at the bodega. This could qualify it to be declared as a Reserva; though the oak aging regime and attention to detail here are comprabable to other Bodegas’ Gran Reservas. The wines are unfined and unfiltered. Natural, as I see it. As with the latter R. Lopez de Heredia, the majority of bottles usually end up in the local Spanish market. Drink like the Spaniards: drink Rioja, from magnum, with age.” — David — ~ please note : discounts are automatically applied at the digital check-out! ~ — Hermanos Pecina 2014 Rioja Crianza ‘Senorio de P’ (MAGNUM) (Shelf Price: $112.00) Offer: $90.00 “Hailing from a cool, slightly dismal and wet vintage this 2014 Crianza from ultra-traditionalist estate Hermanos (Brothers) Pecina has a winsome aromatic profile of dried red flowers, incense, and herbs. There is a core of crushed red berry fruits which, with aeration, is increasingly trimmed with earth, maduro cigars, campfire ash, and a touch of Whittaker’s Coconut Slab. The palate is utterly silken, with soft and nearly resolved tannin, underscored by a fine line of refreshing acidity. There is a marine touch on the finish as well as a wonderful, faintly caressing nudge from the acidity on the close. Dark cherry, dried strawberry, shaved coconut; sweet herbs and dried orange rind. There is a disarming degree of succulence on the palate. Very good drinking - fine. I am not thinking too hard about this one, and neither should you. By the way, my tasting glass is suddenly empty … ” — David & “Dark red. Spice-tinged red berry and cherry scents are complemented by hints of coconut and succulent herbs. Shows good energy and cut on the palate, offering oak-spiced bitter cherry and red currant flavours and a tangy suggestion of blood orange. Dusty tannins frame a long, nervy finish that leaves a subtle floral quality behind.” 91pts — Josh Raynolds, vinous.com Order here (Link) — The new Le Tuffeau 2026 This week, by the glass Camin Larredya 2023 Jurancon Sec 'La Part Davant' Domaine Tempier 2024 Bandol Rose Protero 2019 Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo 'Capo' … Please join us for a drink soon.
