Mas Jullien - "sheer character and age-worthiness for the money." (A. Galloni, vinous.com)

letuffeau.com (Link) ~ “I first discovered Languedoc in the 1990s as a young wine lover on a budget. I have written about the wines from time to time … they still offer tremendous value and character along with the ability to age effortlessly for years, and, in some cases, decades.” ~ Antonio Galloni, vinous.com Mas Jullien Joncquieres, Languedoc (Southern France) — “Once again I feel that I have accidentally acquired some small degree of vinous clairvoyancy. I order in some wine and the next day an article comes out in a major international publication praising the producer. The producer? Mas Jullien in Languedoc. Quid pluram dicam lectores? Well, just this: once more I exhort to you Readers: try these wines. They are not just generically ‘world class’; they brim with character and soil, posses structure and elegance; they defy characterisation other than on their own terms. I should also point out that unlike many of their local counterparts they are clean; this seems damning in faint praise but when so many punters are out there paying top top dollar for micro-production cult wines that are marred by VA, Brettanomyces, and bacterial flaws it needs to be stated. The reds, by the way, more than very fine … they are very good. Antonio Galloni opines, below “This is gorgeous stuff … … an absolute dream … In a word: magnificent.” And the white? Unique and excellent - Galloni again: “it is very clearly one of the most pedigreed whites in the world.” Again: quid pluram dicam lectores?” — David … Mas Jullien: A Languedoc Tale (excerpts) “Olivier Jullien is one of the trailblazers in the Languedoc. Jullien founded his domaine in 1985 with just three hectares of vineyards. At the time, Languedoc was known mostly for turning out volumes of largely undistinguished wines. But Jullien had a different vision, a vision of an estate focused on sustainable farming, low yields and minimalist winemaking. It was a radical departure from the world Jullien grew up in, where vignerons like his father sold grapes to the local cooperative. Mas Jullien is in Joncquieres, on the Terres du Larzac plateau, an area that has started to receive some attention as of late. The appellation lies on the foothills of the Causse du Larzac mountain range, nestled between the Herault and Lergue Rivers. Rocky, alluvial soils, elevation and a relatively cool micro-climate with strong diurnal shifts yield wines of extreme complexity and nuance that age exceptionally well. Today, Olivier Jullien farms approximately 15 hectares of vineyards. Vineyards are farmed sustainably, although Jullien has eschewed formal certifications since the mid-2000s so that he has the flexibility to adapt to the needs of each vintage.” — Antonio Galloni, vinous.com — ~ please note : discounts are automatically applied at the digital check-out! ~ — The White I Mas Jullien 2022 Pays d'Herault Blanc (Shelf Price: $179.00) Offer: $145.00 (20%-off) “The Vin de Pays de l'Herault Blanc is an old-vine blend of Clairette, Carignan Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc aged in large-format wood, with a composition that varies from year to year. The Blanc can be enjoyed young for its freshness and vivacity, but the real magic happens with a few years in bottle, when the wine starts to gain textural richness and phenolic intensity while retaining its essential minerality. Readers who can find the Blanc are in for a treat, as it is very clearly one of the most pedigreed whites in the world. Pricing remains mystifyingly low considering its quality, personality and ability to gain notable complexity in bottle. I can’t think of too many whites that offer this much sheer character and age-worthiness for the money. The 2022 Vin de Pays de l’Herault Blanc is laced with hints of apricot, lemon confit and light tropical infusions. Brisk and airy, with just a hint of exoticism, the 2022 is an intriguing white. Vibrant acids pull it all together on the finish. In this vertical, the 2022 is a bit more open knit than many of the surrounding vintages, making it a fine choice for drinking today. I am curious to see how it ages. Texturally full yet with incisive acidity and near-red tannins, this is not light-years away from the Chateau Simone Rose. Further sweet red fruits, especially strawberries and some macerated cherry, orange rind, dried herbs, and dash of bitters on the close.” — David (Tasted: October, 2025) Order by reply email here (Link) The Reds III Mas Jullien 2021 Terrasses du Larzac 'La Brune' (Shelf Price: $179.00) Offer: $145.00 (20%-off) “The 2021 'La Brune' from Mas Julien pours a mid-dark ruby and violet melange in the glass. Serious and restrained, it unfurls slowly in the glass with ripe notes of a dark fruit core of fresh blueberry and plum preserve; hoisin, cedar, and warm embers encircle this central spine of fruit, with hints of terracotta and cigar humidor enwreathing the whole profile. There is something classical, structured here that is quite Claret-like. I find this very appealing. The palate is resolutely medium-bodied, with broadly incisive tannin and again a sense of structure and presence that though granitic is never blocky. Fruit at this stage is playing second-fiddle to delightful notes of spice, cigars, and dark earth; cocoa nibs are present along with dark plums and black cherry. The finish is long, lilting, and surprisingly delicate ... redolent of violets. Superb; not something I say every day about a Southern French wine too.” — David (Tasted: October, 2025) Order here (Link) IV Mas Jullien 2021 Terrasses du Larzac 'Autour de Jonquieres' (Shelf Price: $179.00) Offer: $145.00 (20%-off) “The Terrasses du Larzac Autour de Jonquieres (previously labeled as Coteaux du Languedoc) is the core wine, a blend of Mourvèdre, Carignan and Syrah taken from a collection of parcels that spends two years in large-format wood. Prior to 2017, the Autour de Jonquières included some Grenache and Cinsault, which Jullien gradually phased out in favor of Mourvedre. The 2021 Terrasses du Larzac Autour de Jonquieres is another wine that shows just how impressive this vintage is here. Aromatic and powerful, with notable punch, the 2021 delivers the goods. Dark red cherry, plum, cedar, new leather and sweet pipe tobacco infuse the 2021 with real character and nuance. This is gorgeous stuff. Drink: 2028-2046” 95pts — Antonio Galloni, vinous.com (Tasted: April, 2026) Order by reply email here (Link) V Mas Jullien 2021 Terrasses du Larzac 'Carlan' (Shelf Price: $179.00) Offer: $145.00 (20%-off) “The Carlan, first bottled in 2009, is somewhat of a stylistic outlier in the range, as it is the only wine in the lineup from sites planted on sand and schist, whereas most of the other vineyards feature clay/limestone soils. This Grenache- and Carignan-driven blend from old vines offers a distinctive aromatic and flavour profile, along with a silkier texture vis-a-vis the other reds. The 2021 Terrasses du Larzac Carlan is fabulous. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2021 is an absolute dream. Black cherry, leather, incense, tobacco, liquorice and espresso build effortlessly into a crescendo of aromas, flavours and textures that is utterly mind-blowing. Even with all its intensity, the 2021 remains light on its feet for such a rich wine. A closing flourish of sweetly perfumed overtones rounds things out with style. Drink: 2025-2036” 94pts — Antonio Galloni, vinous.com (Tasted: April, 2026) Order by reply email here (Link) VI Mas Jullien 2021 Terrasses du Larzac 'Lous Rougeos' (Shelf Price: $179.00) Offer: $145.00 (20%-off) “In 2018, Olivier Jullien expanded his range with the Lous Rougeos, a Carignan- and Syrah-based blend aged in foudre. Elevation of 400 to 450 meters (Jullien’s highest-elevation site) and western exposure yield a wine of notable complexity. The 2021 Terrasses du Larzac Lous Rougeos marries textural finesse and power with aplomb. Plush, silky tannins wrap around a core of sumptuous dark fruit. The 2021 is a very young wine. I would prefer to cellar it, but all the elements are well balanced. Dark red and blue fruits, spice and lavender are amplified in the glass. The 2021 is one of the most beautiful and complete wines I have tasted from Mas Jullien. In a word: magnificent.
