Frankland Estate 2022 Frankland River Riesling 'Alter Weg'

Spending 11 months in old fuders (1000L & 500L German barrels) following a wild yeast ferment, the 2022 Alter Weg Riesling really lives up to it's name. This is Riesling made the 'old way'. Complex and savoury aromas burst from the glass: sea-spray and mineral notes are at the fore here: talc and chalk mingle with autolytic, leesy flavours. All this is wreathed in jasmine and honeysuckle florals together with lemon rind and grapefruit zest. The palate is dense yet finishes with a limestone mineral flourish. Salted almond, citrus pith, and green apple abound, with fennel and cut herb phenolics providing a refreshing lift as well as a counterbalance to the palate's appropriate density. - David
