The palate is fresh with chalky minerality and a finer bead than most of its competitors; there is a surging line of acidity here matched to the riper fruit and lees derived notes. Green apple, apricot, and Meyer lemon flesh mingle with savoury nuances including shaved parmesan and pain grille. Complex and refreshing in the way Recoltant Champagne should be, but often isn't. Fine!” — David Order here (Link)(Link) White II Donnhoff 2023 Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken (Shelf Price: $98.00) Offer: $87.00 “This 2023 Riesling from the Kahlenberg Erste Lage (1er Cru) vineyard, down river from the cooler Donnhoff Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) sites, possesses a classically Nahe nose of wet granite, firm yet perfumed peach, lemon verbana, citron, and steeped Wulong tea. The more air this wine takes on, the stonier the aromatic profile tends; a wealth of olfactory mineral detail is revealed include crushed quartz, smooth river stones, and damp rocky soil. Some crushed citrus leaf and pineapple tops, ‘vegetal’ as the Germans would say, lingers background along with an unsteeped raw Pu Er note. The palate possess a wonderful sliced fruit quality before powerful phenolics kick in with granitic grip, then tends more opulent and even herbal on the finish with Riesling tannin in support. There is a sense of riven in twain by a line of acidity straight down the centre of the tongue. White peach, spicy Tahitian lime, salty minerals, and a complex of wreathing thyme and pineapple salvia along the close. Need I close out this note by saying the finish, obviously resonant for a wine of its price, is both cooling and stimulating at once. I reserve ‘Superb’ for the Donnhoff Grosse Lage wines; high praise - ‘Very Fine’. Objectively.” — David Order here (Link) III Michel Delhommeau 2023 Muscadet Sevre et Maine ‘Fief Seigneur’ (Shelf Price: $56.00) Offer: $49.00 “Chiselled and precise aromatically, the 2023 Muscadet 'Fief Seigneur' from Michel Delhommeau unwinds in the glass with an estuarine and saline nose focusing on preserved lemon rind, green and yellow apples, and pithy melon rind hints all trimmed by light crustacea scents and struck flint. The palate is creamily texture, akin to pacific oysters, with a steely mineral edge that follows bright acidity and shell-like minerality. Lemon and lime curds, bitter lemon, quinine, and early season pear. The finish is focused yet has an appealing activity not often conveyed by Chablis, perhaps a result of more generous (organic) rather than interventionist farming techniques. Fine.” — David Order here (Link)(Link) Rose IV Mas Jullien 2023 Languedoc Rose (Shelf Price: $85.00) Offer: $76.00 “Largely Cinsault together with Mourvedre, and a full pink-onion skin in the glass, this emphatic rose bursts from the glass with notions of rose petals, sweet strawberries and cherries, and potpourri scents; hints of orange rind and spice add complexity. Texturally full yet with incisive acidity and near-red tannins, this is not light-years away from the Chateau Simone Rose. Further sweet red fruits, especially strawberries and some macerated cherry, orange rind, dried herbs, and dash of bitters on the close.” — David Order here (Link)(Link) Red V Les Heritiers Saint-Genys 2019 Morgon ‘En Ruyere’ Offer: $89.00 “Fragrant and floral on the very complex nose, which is still really youthful. Staggering concentration and vitality on the palate, a huge tannin structure underlying the deep red-fruit character. So plush at the very long finish that it literally takes your breath away. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.” 97pts — Stuart Piggott, jamessuckling.com & “I sampled this last week when I shared a glass (or two) with a very generous friend. This is is a closed phase, in the manner of Grand Cru Burgundy. Exceptionally powerful yet silken this remains an incredible Beaujolais that needs to be experienced by the naysayers of the variety. There are classical Gamay hallmarks here but so serious the structure, so silken the palate, and so concentrated the flavours that it exists in another realm entirely. Must be tasted to be believed.” — David Order here (Link) V (Link) I Clos de Gamot 2022 Cahors (Shelf Price: $65.00) Offer: $58.00 “Black wine by reputation, though in reality a fully opaque ruby tending violet in the glass. No luridity. An introspective yet not brooding nose with a core of Prune d’Ente, steeped black tea, and bitter dark chocolate; then roasting tray, maduro cigars, and black cherries; surrounding are echoes of loamy soil and bergamot. Aeration brings powerful waves of blackberry preserve and Sienese panforte (including the overtones of almond essence); then, strangely, marine influenced freshness with iodine and Latakia tobacco. The palate, surprisingly fresh and medium-bodied without stewed density, is charmingly sullen and framed by serious and mildly rustic tannins; tarragon and sage abound, blood orange, and a core of crushed fresh blackberries. Repeating spice notes on the close. One cannot imagine a more classical Cahors. Fine.” — David Order here (Link)(Link) The new Le Tuffeau 2026 … As mentioned above Le Tuffeau is open for 2026.
