“Stout favourites here by producers beloved by the three of us. How could any pack not have a wine by Bridget Mac (Werkstatt) or Alessandro Stefani; ditto their good friend Doug Lilburne (Mis en Place). Indeed, his Rose is not just stellar value but fascinating too … elevaged under oxidative conditions it is a shoe-in for Clos Cibonne. Speaking of resemblances, anyone would pick the Clo Chardonnay from Orange blind as a Ganevat; beautiful flor notes here. State of Nature is the former label of Simon Caica, whose elegant eponymous Cinsault was over-subscribed at his tasting. And, if you’re not drinking Provenance wines … you should be; Geelong Shiraz? Absolutely. Go Cats.”

“Big guns here: Coops and Payne’s Rise bring the serious goods; classic white Bordeaux writ Australian, and serious Yarra Valley Claret from Tim and Narelle, old vines close to my heart. Sailor Seeks Horse … the name has always made me uncomfortable but these wines, from perhaps one of the world’s most marginal vineyards is true winemaking on the edge. Adelina: another wine that perennially needs a better label but legend Col McBryde makes extraordinary Grenache from ancient vines immediately next to Wendouree. WA? We never promote the place enough. An OTT Chardonnay from Julian Langworthy and a sehr Deutsche Riesling from Frankland Estate. The latter is next to Crawford River in quality.”
