"Savouriness reigns, fruit rises" - Old Vine Magic from Brett Grocke (Eperosa)

letuffeau.com (Link) ~ “Many angles are covered. Much fun is had.” ~ Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au … Eperosa Krondorf, Barossa Valley — “Brett Grocke came by the shop some time ago. He had a bag full of Barossa, old vine reds. To be honest: Shiraz is, by and large, beyond my comprehension. He had, however, a single white with him: a Semillon with which I immediately felt an affinity. I mentioned that his white bore a passing resemblance, in some fundamental fashion, to a Semillon crafted by a young winemaker … Cooper Davis-Draper (Oria-Riff). Brett remarked that he knew Cooper well … as Cooper had worked for him when both parties made their respective Semillon. Small world? Very. Brett is the real deal: he crafts wild but never feral wines from old (to ancient!) vine material. The Semillon vines for the wine below were planted in 1941. One would suppose they are fully mature and low-yielding by now. Barossa Semillon is perhaps my guiltiest of guilty pleasures. In the wine world we are all meant to pledge allegiance to old bottlings of Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Semillon; I have found great pleasure in going off-piste to the waxy, lanolin-inflected world that Semillon spins in the Barossa. And the rose? Well, I may not quite agree with Campbell Mattinson that this is the best Australian Rose (that crown goes, so far, to Charlie Mann/Charles Oliver Wines) … but it is pretty amazing. For those fans of Cibonne ‘Vignettes’ or R. Lopez de Heredia Rosado … shhhh.” — David — ~ please note : discounts are automatically applied at the digital check-out! ~ — “Don’t know about you, but I love the fact that someone got out their shovel in the Barossa, in the middle of a world war, and dug some holes, and planted rows of Semillon in sandy, granitic soil, in 1941. Such an act of faith, and an act of hope, in sandy soils, in Semillon, and in sun.” — Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au I Eperosa 2024 Barossa Valley Semillon 'Magnolia 1941' limited (Shelf Price: $58.00) Offer: $49.00 “There’s a yellow-golden hue to this wine, and a widespread yeastiness to the flavour profile, and a texture like sun on the skin of grapes, and a spread through the finish that’s like a sunset of dried citrus rind and stonefruit and bark. The wine looks yellow, tastes orange, feels like wax-polished stones and just when you think savouriness reigns, fruit rises. It’s champion stuff.” 95pts — Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au Order here (Link) II Eperosa 2024 Barossa Valley Grenache Mataro Rose limited (Shelf Price: $58.00) Offer: $49.00 “If I had open slather on any rose, Australian or otherwise, Eperosa Rose would be odds-on to be my choice. It’s serious and cerebral and yet so moreish. It’s a dry, yeasty, salty wine with rushes of strawberry, garden herbs, chalk and honey. It’s refreshing and mouthwatering but it has texture and even a bit of grip. Many angles are covered. Much fun is had.” 95pts — Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au Order here (Link) — The new Le Tuffeau 2026 This week, by the glass Joshua Cooper 2024 Central Victoria Chardonnay ‘Dash Farms’ Domaine Tempier 2023 Bandol Rose Sette 2021 Nizza … As mentioned above Le Tuffeau is open for 2026.
