“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines?" - 2023 Vintage Release

letuffeau.com (Link) Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy — “Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.” — Neal Martin, vinous.com “Sebastien Cathiard considers 2023 a full crop but balanced and fresh, in a drinkable style, full of fruit, to drink before 2022. He started on 13th September, taking 4 days for the main Cote, then a further four and a half for the rest. He estimates that Hautes Cotes de Nuits temperatures are a good 1 to 1.5 degrees cooler than the Cote, hence later picking. The wines came in between 12 and 13% naturally, with occasional chaptalisation afterwards. The wines will stay in barrel through to the end of March. Sebastien needed more new barrels after the very small 2021 crop (his barrels being on a two year cycle). So as not to unbalance the higher appellations, the extra was used on the generic regional wines.” — Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy — ~ please note : all orders by replay email ~ — I Domaine Sylvain Cathiard 2023 Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Rouge ‘Aux Chaumes’ (Shelf Price: $275.00) Offer Price: $235.00 “The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Aux Chaumes has a subtle, floral bouquet with impressive precision and poise. Its very pure red fruit seems to shimmer with energy. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip and slightly darker fruit than the regular Hautes-Cotes. More salinity comes through on the finish. Excellent.” (90-92)pts — Neal Martin, vinous.com II Domaine Sylvain Cathiard 2023 Vosne-Romanee (Shelf Price: $525.00) Offer Price: $459.00 “The 2023 Vosne-Romanee Village has a well-defined bouquet of redcurrant and raspberry fruit with touches of rose petal and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and vibrant with a poised and pixelated finish. This is a very delicious Vosne-Romanee.” (90-92)pts — Neal Martin, vinous.com & “Mid ruby purple, this has by some way the classiest nose, and the most energy of fruit on the palate, with the heady and slightly spicy character of Vosne-Romanée. This entirely delivers and will only grow in bottle. More new oak than the other village wines (50%), but less effect because of greater fruit intensity. ” (90-92)pts — Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy — “I recently had the pleasure of enjoying a bottle of Sylvain Cathiard 2022 Hautes-Cotes de Nuits ‘Aux Chaumes’ at a wine bar in the city. Despite initially craving a Dujac, this wine though at the other end of the vinous spectrum, utterly erased the initial desire and perfectly satiated the Burgundian craving. There is a highly digestible quality to the Cathiard wines, a quality that veers almost over the line to gourmand but is kept in check buy beautiful freshness and acidity. They are wines of great vibrancy and practically sparkle with life. Looking back at the moment, the Dujac would have demanded more intellectually while Cathiard provided pure pleasure. Is that not why we drink Burgundy, after all? Maybe I am a lowly sybarite in this regard. Every time I open a wine from Sylvain I am struck by how simply delicious they are to drink. I hope this sentiment does not damn them with faint praise as they are very fine indeed.” — David If you would like any of the above, would like to come by for a private appointment, or just have some questions — please let us know.
