“Enlightenment, understood in the widest sense as the advance of thought, has always aimed at liberating human beings from fear and installing them as masters. Yet the wholly enlightened earth is radiant with triumphant calamity. Enlightenment’s program was the disenchantment of the world. It wanted to dispel myths, to overthrow fantasy with knowledge.”
Dialectic of the Enlightenment — Max Horkheimer & Theodor Adorno

“One must imagine Nick, the Justine, and myself the Juliette of Claret.”

“Sorrenberg’s wines attract an almost cult-like devotion. I cannot say this fame is undeserved, but it does invoke in me an instinctive suspicion. Hype begets naked emperors and disappointment. It was with this mindset that I approached the Sorrenberg 2024 Cabernet blend.”

“The nose … I just can’t get over the nose! The wine opens with fresh raspberries, preserved cherries, and chinotto orange framed by warm terracotta and an honeyed oak sweetness. Incredibly charming. This is a wine of olfactory harmony; of perfect ripeness. There is a medicinal quality without the slightest suggestion of green hardness. There is an immediate generosity here too, but the wine does not feel overripe nor overly fruity. The palate follows with an immediate energy, an acidity which expands rapidly across the whole mouth before quickly retreating, giving way to a long, salty-sweet plum mid-palate before finishing with a gentle but persistent grapefruit bitterness. The texture is fine and silken with a mouthwatering chalky grip along the sides of the palate towards the close.
Utterly delicious. My tasting glass is well and truly gone. I do not often speak so highly of a claret. Even less so from a producer who commands this kind of hype, but I have to admit — I am very, very impressed.”

“The paranoid over-consistency, the bad infinity of never-changing judgment, is a lack of consistency in thought; instead of conceptually carrying through the failure of the absolute claim and thereby continuing to qualify his or her judgment, the paranoiac clings obdurately to the claim which has caused the judgment to fail. Instead of going further by penetrating its subject matter more deeply, thought places itself entirely in the hopeless service of the particular judgment. The latter's irresistibility is the same as its intact positivity, and the paranoiac's weakness is that of thought itself. For reflection, which in the healthy subject breaks the power of immediacy, is never as compelling as the illusion it dispels.”
