San Giusto a Rentennano

“San Giusto a Rentennano remains a beacon for excellence. The Martini di Cigala family’s commitment to quality comes through loud and clear, something that is especially evident in 2023 and 2024, years that presented plenty of challenges. The 2024 vintage started much like 2023, with heavy rains throughout the spring. “We had major losses from hail in about 10 hectares. Everywhere else we dropped a significant amount of crop in July and August, and then in another pass in late August and early September,” explained Luca Martini di Cigala. “Ripeness came very slowly; all the wines are lower in alcohol than the norm. In the cellar, we bled as much as 15-20% to achieve a more ideal balance of juice to skins.”
Broadly speaking, the wines have a distinct tannin profile these days, the result of measured changes in pressing, vinification and oak aging that, when taken together, result in wines of greater transparency and nuance than in the past. Percarlo and the Riserva Baroncole are now both aged 70% in 30HL casks and 30% in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels; only La Ricolma is done entirely in 500- and 225-liter French oak barrels. That changes in 2025 with the introduction of larger-format wood.”

“Sadly, Alice and Olivier de Moor took the brunt of the challenging 2024 growing season. Given that they are stringent organic winemakers with limited means at their disposal, it was no surprise that their roster of wines was diminished. “It was a catastrophe because of the mildew,” a sanguine Olivier de Moor told me, “and we just have one cuvee for all the Chablis. Yields were around 10 hl/ha because of that and the frost.” That one cuvee is the L’Humeur du Temps, of which they made around 7,000 bottles … [t]o compensate, we focused on the bottled 2023s, fecund with tempting, supremely gifted wines such as the Chablis Coteau de Rosette and the quite brilliant Aligote Plantation 1902. Despite the setbacks of 2024, the de Moors’ wines are still some of my first choices when seeking something more on the natural side.”

“This wine is made from grapes sourced from the Maconnais, from a young grower the de Moors have been working with for 3 years now who does not make wine - his passions are in the vineyard. The directly-pressed grapes were aged in barrels for one year before blending prior to bottling. The vineyard, now certified organic, is young and the wine is fresh, fruit-forward and very easy to drink. It would usually also have some Chardonnay sourced from northern Burgundy but, because the problems were across the region, there was none in 2024.”

“The NV Bourgogne Aligote is a blend of 75% of the 2023 vintage and 25% of the 2022 vintage after the latter took an extraordinarily long time to ferment through, plus of course, the loss of the 2024 harvest. This is clean and fresh on the nose, articulating Aligote with the de Moor's usual panache. The palate is well-balanced with lovely texture, a keen line of acidity, a liberal helping of stem ginger, and a piquant, almost penetrating finish that demands a large plate of seafood. This is worth hunting down.”

Alice & Olivier de Moor 2024 Chablis ‘l’Humeur du Temps’

“The 2024 Chablis l’Humeur du Temps is the only cuvee produced in this vintage due to complications caused by mildew, etc etc. Total volume was around 80 hectolitres, or around 7,000 bottles, although Olivier de Moor cannot recall exactly, perhaps he just wants to forget such bad memories. It comes from the home village of Courgis. Raised for 12 months in used barrel, it has a pretty, slightly yeasty and smoky nose that unfurls in the glass. The palate is rounded on entry, with orange pith, sour lemon, and light peppery notes, making this an easy-going l’Humeur du Temps to drink over the next four to five years.”
