2023 Porepunkah Tempranillo

“Sometimes you just have to throw a few wines into the ring and see what happens.
I ordered the Mayford Tempranillo to ensure we had an alternative varietal from Australia on the shelf. Last week I opened a bottle to write a tasting note, and was simply rewarded with Australia’s finest Tempranillo.
This is not a wine for everyone. This is a deeply serious wine, a wine of conviction and gravitas that will reward serious contemplation when in the glass, and serious cellaring alike.
Our response was similar to the Chardonnay. A handful of bottles came in with the Tempranillo above. We sampled. We were astonished by the quality and qualities of the wine. Here is a Chardonnay with all the weight and power of Beechworth, as well as a similar mineral and praline-led flavour spectrum, but with greater finesse and delicacy than their counterparts to the North.
These wines have to be tasted to be believed. Otherwise you can just take my word for it …”

“This is such an exquisite wine. Declaring it now: Aussie Chassagne.
And now, as a proper ‘David note’ …”

“Refined, tightly coiled aromatic profile with a line of noble reduction. Fruit is not at the fore here, hence the distinctly Burgundian sensibility. Rosemary oil and gunflint, smashed rock lay poised above nougat and yellow florals, accompanied by earth and mineral nuances. Aromatically the fruit unfurls slowly, and with grace; peach and peach skin, white nectarine, and hints of citrus confiture. The palate is elegant and flowing, with a layered feel to fine phenolics and beautiful support from faint oak tannin. The close is long and mineral, cloaked in fruit and dry extract. Nougat and white stone-fruit, Wu Long tea, faint toasted bran, with graceful crushed lime leaf and zest hovering over a confiture richness. Hints of praline on the close. Finishes very delicately with an impression of nuance and ethereality.”

“Without the ‘appellation inflation’, this is the value proposition of the year for me. Finer than nearly all Beechworth Chardonnays, yet half the price.”

“Thinking about this wine a week later, I am fixated on the sophistication and complexity of its phenolic profile. Both Giaconda and Savaterre rule the roost to the North, aromatically speaking of course, but sometimes the former lacks phenolic depth and palate structure, while the latter has these elements in spades to the point of coarseness in youth. Mayford avoids these pitfalls and perhaps is as fine a wine for it.”

Mayford 2022 Porepunkah Tempranillo
(Shelf price: $54.00)
Offer: $45.00
“This will be a serious note for a serious wine.
A deep, nearly fully opaque ruby with hints of violet trimming. Unfurls slowly in the glass with great reserve. Initially: cigar humidor, wet stone, and black cherry preserve. There is a thin veneer of oak here that like a black hole is pulling the oxygen beyond the event horizon, rewarding us on the other side with integration. Cocoa nibs, bitter dark chocolate, graphite, maduro cigar wrapper, warm embers, camphor, cured leather all gain in delineation. The palate is medium bodied, fresh with bright acidity; firm tannins rise in the late palate and provide ample grip. These tannins posses a beautiful, old-world layered quality. There is again an interplay of freshness and brightness, a light at the end of the tunnel, at the conclusion almost 15 seconds after a sip. Red cherries abound; there is great succulence here before river stone minerality, bitter chocolate, and orange zest. Dried herbs, especially marjoram and bay, emerge slowly. There is a fascinating cotillon danced between these
elements on the close. Assuredly Australia’s finest Tempranillo.
I am instantly enamoured. A case of these are disappearing into the cellar.”
