Our Personal Christmas Selection
—
“I will keep this brief. The ‘silly season’, Christmas, other seasonal holidays, and New Years Eve may all be joyous and stressful days in equal measure. Certainly, I will feel this stress myself as the events pile up (yes, even drinking copious amounts of fine Burgundies and Clarets can take its toll on me) and as we inch ever closer to Zero Hour: when myself and my wife host our families on Christmas Day. Talk about stress!
Good thing we will have ample quality wine at hand. Quality wine that need not break the bank, as I should well add.
We hope the below recommendations take the stress of choosing, and the stress of spending, out of the equation for you dear reader.
Consider the below all personally chosen, representative of producers that we have championed over our first year of operations here at Le Tuffeau.
Bon vin.”

The Whites
I
Crawford River 2024 Henty Riesling ‘Strata’
(Shelf Price: $45.00)
Offer Price: $40.00
“The 2024 ‘Strata’ Riesling, from ‘young vines’ planted in 2000-01 is more open knit and effusive than the 'Estate' Riesling, with a corresponding lower level of intensity. Marked by spicy lime and lime leaf aromas, the olfactory profile has a core of white orchard fruit with complexity in the form of dashes of crushed minerals and peppercorns. The palate is softly contoured, expressive, and with a hint of residual sugar. The finish is mineral inflected and dry. Fleshy elements of white nectarine and yellow apple abound, together with mandarin peel and exotic touches. Moreish without lacking in elegance.”

Mayford 2023 Porepunkah Chardonnay
(Shelf Price: $54.00)
Offer Price: $49.00
“Refined, tightly coiled aromatic profile with a line of noble reduction. Fruit is not at the fore here, hence the distinctly Burgundian sensibility. Rosemary oil and gunflint, smashed rock lay poised above nougat and yellow florals, accompanied by earth and mineral nuances. Aromatically the fruit unfurls slowly, and with grace; peach and peach skin, white nectarine, and hints of citrus confiture. The palate is elegant and flowing, with a layered feel to fine phenolics and beautiful support from faint oak tannin. The close is long and mineral, cloaked in fruit and dry extract. Nougat and white stone-fruit, Wu Long tea, faint toasted bran, with graceful crushed lime leaf and zest hovering over a confiture richness. Hints of praline on the close. Finishes very delicately with an impression of nuance and ethereality.”

The Sole Rose …
… that you will need for this Summer
III
Koomilya 2025 McLaren Vale Mataro Rose
(Shelf Price: $54.00)
Offer Price: $49.00
“From the outset I need to state that I am a huge fan of this wine, that being said it feels slightly nascent ... which for an Australian Rose is hugely promising; it feels coiled, and has the legs to run at least a decade after vintage (and surely more), bringing positive development in the fashion that aged Bandol (Terrebrune and Tempier) delivers in great vintages.
A serious nose with a core of fresh, just ripe strawberry mingled with peach skin; around this waft savoury and complexifying aromas of pea shoot, white pepper, fresh herbs, and orange blossom. With time these will deepen in pitch. The palate is initially fresh, before a wave of fuller texture washes over, then phenolics kick in with acid seemingly running around the edges to keep everything travelling. There is a feeling of washing ashore on the limestone south England cliffs; tidal flow of chalk and brine. Concentrated, and firm, with crushed red and white strawberry, further peach skin, bay, hints of deeper Mataro fruit, dried peel, and a long chalk and balsam infused close. This feels, gratifyingly, that it is holding a lot in reserve. There is nothing presently akin to this on the market coming from Australian producers.”

The Reds
IV
Sentio 2025 King Valley Gamay
(Shelf Price: $47.00)
Offer Price: $43.00
“A stunning pure ruby in the glass, with the barest suggestion of garnet.
There is a vibrant, alluring nose that really says ‘Gamay, but make it Australian.’ Morello cherry; dare I say Griottes? Dried grass, hints of spices, balsam, some red floral aspects, plum, and hints of varietal (and composing) esters behind.
The fresh, brightly acid-led palate follows with deeper pitched flavours, weightier tannins, and fuller presence than the 2024. Longer too. Dark cherry, cherry preserve, then a wave of bright citrus and blood orange, dried grass and fresh bay, finishing simultaneously silken with hints of granite and mineral fading out on the close. Superb.”

V
Gembrook Hill 2024 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
(Shelf Price: $74.00)
Offer Price: $67.00
“The 2024 Pinot Noir from Gembrook bewitches both the eye and the nose in the glass, seducing the drinker with a stunningly pellucid and pure ruby hue. Many roses and rosatos are deeper hued than this wine. Though still nascent, enchanting aromas of raspberries, cherries, Lincoln rose, and candied peel waft from the glass. Revisiting this wine the following day the tension initially apparent between some new oak and whole bunch feels resolved, and there is a delicate sensation of ‘luminosity’ to the wine. The aromatics feel very unforced. The palate is remarkably refined, satiny and round with delicate yet youthfully vibrant tannin. Bright raspberry and cherry feel almost defined by this wine, alongside candied petals and peel, some minerality streaks, and a long spice inflected finish. A wine of great poise and reserve. Exceptional.”

VI
Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot 2022 Bordeaux ‘Instant’
(Shelf Price: $49.00)
Offer Price: $45.00
“This bargain ‘Instant’ from Chateau Beau-Sejour brims enthusiastically with bright fruit and terroir-specificity. Boysenberry, bay, blood orange, and baking chocolate burst from the glass and make an instant appeal to the senses before the cerebral cortex kicks in and scents of limestone, oyster-shell, and faint vinesmoke notes emerge. Who am I kidding? this wine is about pure pleasure, retaining amply dense fruit, light tannin, and pleasingly chalky and refreshing mineral grip.
What a gorgeous entry-level offering from the famille Becot. Rare to see a wine at this price-point in Bordeaux, or indeed anywhere, that expresses the unique qualities of its terroir so clearly.
Gone in an instant, and needing a second glass. There is thinking claret and there is drinking claret. This is the latter.”
