Domaine Moulin-la-Viguerie
Tavel
—
“Tavel, readers, is a rare rosé-only appellation nestled in the Southern Rhone not far from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. By French standards it is a relatively small appellation, at nearly 1000 hectares. Like Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the soils are dominated by galets roules, creating somewhat of a Martian landscape to the eye.
Kermit Lynch notes that Tavel is the rosé of kings.
After the creation of the Tavel AOC in the first wave of appellations legally launched in the mid-1930s, this wine fell on hard times. Uncaring producers mistreated their vineyards and made generic wines in vessels unsuited to their maturation. Enter stage left: an iconoclast. No, it’s not Eric Pfifferling of L’Angalore. Our hero today is Gael Petit, the current custodian of Domaine Moulin-la-Viguerie, a truly ancient winemaking house that has stood since the sixteenth century. Gael has re-converted the management of his mature Grenache and Cinsault vines to fully organic practices, and maintains a collection of beautiful vintage concrete tanks for ferment, using classic, very large format oak for elevage. Production is very limited, at about 150 cases per cuvee.
These come warmly recommended to lovers of serious rosé, explorers of Southern French wines, and those of you readers who don’t want to pay $150 for an iffy bottle of overpriced hype wine.
Bon vin.”

Domaine Moulin-la-Viguerie 2023 Vin de France Rose ‘Brunes Blanches — fons singularis’
(Shelf Price: $65.00)
Offer Price: $55.00
“Crafted from vines rooted in loamy, sandy and white clay soils... [this wine is] perfumed and vibrant, wafting from the glass with aromas of strawberries, pomegranate, red berries and spring flowers. Medium-bodied and elegantly juicy, it’s round and sappy, with good depth at the core, framed by delicate tannins and concluding with a fresh, mouthwatering and ethereal finish. This is an excellent introduction to Gaël Petit’s distinctive stylistic universe. It was matured with 30% in barrels and the rest in tanks.”

Domaine Moulin-la-Viguerie 2023 Tavel ‘Posterite Soixante-Dix’
(Shelf Price: $74.00)
Offer Price: $63.00
“A blend of equal parts Grenache Noir and Cinsault, the 2023 Posterité 70 opens with a strikingly perfumed bouquet of rose petals, peonies, red berries and sweet spices. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it offers a fleshy core of fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and a subtle, gastronomic bitterness that lends structure and nuance. The finish is long, ethereal and delicately infused with notes of apricot. Macerated in concrete tanks—with an undisclosed proportion vinified by direct press and matured in barrel—this cuvée is consistently the most vibrant and aromatically refined of the range.”
