Dilworth & Allain
Daylesford, Macedon Ranges
Young Gun of Wine 2020 Overall Winner
&
Young Gun of Wine 2020 ‘Best New Arrival’ Winner
“There is something so wonderful about the community of winemakers nestled around the Macedon Ranges; a small collection of likeminded yet utterly independent men and women crafting unique wines from cooler climes and largely granitic soils.
Chris Dilworth and Loique Allain are, in a way, Victoria's (if not Australia's) most exciting vinous power-couple. Their winery is small and mostly distributed locally; one is more likely to only encounter their wines on the shelf in a Daylesford shop or on the pour at Bar Merenda that anywhere else in the country. Chris is an excellent vigneron, very at home in the vines; he credits his time at Castello di Rampolla (Tuscany) as his main inspiration. Loique is a woman of many talents, equally at home in the cellar, having trained at Domaine Paul Pillot (Chassagne-Montrachet), and at the easel; her now famous lino-prints adorn Joshua Cooper's bottlings!
The below wines, from the 2024 and 2025 vintages, are very fine indeed. Chris mentioned to me that taste is paramount; they pick purely to taste-ripeness. In some years, such as in 2024 this can be a breeze - Chris mentioned that he has never felt so relaxed as entering this vintage, especially at the Dash Farms site. Greater challenges are presented at the tiny ‘Glut Farm’ site down in the Pyrenees, not far from Beaufort but up in the hills and enclosed by bush. Cold to the point of difficulty, Chris and Loique pick Grenache here for their Rose in May! Unheard of, practically, anywhere but the result is a wine with such stunning texture and fullness, yet still fine acidity, that it simply must be tried.
The honours showered on them are well desereved.”

I
Dilworth & Allain 2024 Macedon Ranges Chardonnay 'Glut Farm'
Offer: $74.00
“he 2024 Dash Farms Vineyard Chardonnay hails from Mount Alexander (south of Bendigo, north of Mount Macedon), and the vineyard has a great reputation for producing wines of detail and complex interest. This is absolutely no exception. The nose leads with preserved lemon and white peach, salted nuts, wax and white flowers. The palate is soft, silky and overwhelmingly peaceful in its patient outlay of flavor and texture. It is creamy without being heavy and soft while still retaining form, shape and integrity, and it is so long through the finish. I love this wine wholly. There is an herbal note here, with dried herbs and baking spices too. This is highly recommended, for those who appreciate great and interesting wine”

II
Dilworth & Allain 2025 Pyrenees Rose 'Glut Farm'
(Shelf Price: $54.00)
Offer: $48.00
“The 2025 Glut Farm Vineyard Grenache Rose is light in the glass and ultra-perfumed on the nose, with notes of roses and pink peppercorn, sandalwood, fennel and white pepper. The palate is structural and textural, with spicy tannins and a subtle bitterness from the skins—akin to chinotto or Campari/blood orange zest. This wine is angular in its ways, with a strong contrast of light and dark; if there is a whole-bunch portion here, it is evident and welcome. What a sophisticated, interesting wine this is. This is highly recommended.”

III
Dilworth & Allain 2024 Pyrenees Grenache 'Shays Flat'
(Shelf Price: $54.00)
Offer: $48.00
“The 2024 Shay's Flat Grenache is spicy and herbal, with an abundance of mineral/crushed rock notes that shape the perfume. The tannins provide structure and grit to the palate, which shows ash, chinotto, crushed peppercorns, dried rose petals and tapenade, too. This has the light-and-shade approach to flavor and texture, akin to a chiaroscuro painting or charcoal work, and it is an aspect that is both alluring and magnetic in equal measure. This a superb and elegant wine.”
