“Two Alpine Valleys legends, in the same room at last.
Eleana Anderson should be well known to you, dear Readers. Indeed, she should be well known across Australia. Certainly, she produces the country’s finest Tempranillo. Bar none. Believe me, I know.* She also produces very Shiraz, and a blend I consider to be one of the most collectable wines in the country. More on these soon. At this tasting, however, we will be looking at Eleana’s whites: an exquisite Albarino she produces under the ‘Anderson & Marsh’ label, and a Chardonnay so fine I consider it to be a reference point when examining all Victorian Chardonnay. If this Chardonnay had ‘Beechworth’ on the label (as opposed to the blighted-in-public-perception ‘Porepunkah’!), it would easily command twice the price.
Paula Pipan, and viticulturalist Radley Steel, occupy a near mythical position in my mind. This is not an exaggeration. Some years ago, in another job, I had only heard about them in whispers. Some folk in Alpine Victoria had a vineyard and winery dedicated to Nebbiolo. Nebbiolo solo! I contacted them and got sent a case of wine. I also had a discussion about Nebbiolo’s love of mist at altitude, and the processes that take place in this wet and foggy weather that ameliorate the grape’s fearsome tannins. This information: digested. Their wine: quickly drunk. Fast-forward and they appeared one afternoon at Le Tuffeau for a wine. I promptly placed another order, this time to share. Paula is remarkable, deeply knowledgeable about all things Nebbiolo and Alpine. These wines must be tried.
I look forward to seeing you dear Readers there.”

* I recently participated in an tasting where I was presented with 62 Australian Tempranillos, all blind. It was glaringly obvious not a single one was made by Eleana Anderson!
